The proposed project is a newly-built iron and steel making project, which is located in Shanghai city. The capacity of the proposed project is about 1.5 million tons of pig iron per year. The iron-making process to be employed in the proposed plant is COREX®, which is a process for producing liquid hot metal in a quality which is identical to hot metal produced in blast furnaces. COREX® is a smelting reduction process with coal gasification, iron ore reduction and liquefaction of the resulting iron.
When the proposed project is put into operation, the GHG emission reductions are from two components. Firstly, as a combined process, the COREX® will improve the energy efficiency of the iron-making process; Secondly, the gases produced can be immediately be used for heating or for electricity generation, which will replace the heat and electricity. The estimated annual GHG emission reductions are 660,110 tCO2e. As a more environmentally friendly iron-making process, the proposed project will produce positive economic and environmental benefits and contributes to the local sustainable development through following aspects:
- By utilizing the conventional coal instead of coking coal in normal blast furnace process, the proposed project will reduce the discharge of dust, nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide by more than 90%;
- The electricity generated by the proposed project will replace the coal-fired electricity generation in East China Power Grid, reducing the environmental pollution;
- The proposed project will create employment opportunities for the local community during the construction and operation of the project;
- The proposed project will promote the technology transfer for the developed countries to developing countries.
